Welcome! However it was that you happened to stumble upon this page, I’m glad that you did. Here you will find my personal reflections on life as it happens! Well, that’s the intention, at least…
“Who in the heck are you?!” might be running through your thoughts by now, so allow me to introduce myself properly:
My name is Kiera, and I’m a small-town girl from Belleville, Ontario. At 19 years old, I’m experiencing more changes and adventures than I could have ever imagined, so I’m documenting them here! In two short weeks from now, I will be living in Toronto and starting my first year of university at what can only be described as my dream school ❤ I start studying an iBA (International Bachelor of Arts) in International Studies and Political Science at Glendon College, the bilingual campus of York University. I am beyond excited to be studying what I love, and to really be immersing myself in things I’m passionate about. I love school to begin with (hey, I’ll own that geek label), and I can’t wait to delve deeper into the topics I find the most captivating.
I guess I’m still practically a stranger to you if all I attach to my name is my degree title, right? Here are some fast facts:
- On top of being a student, I’m also a musician. Primarily a singer, I am more than happy to belt out any sort of tune! I’ve studied classical music for a long time, but I’m a sucker for just about any style, whether it’s rock, folk or musical theatre. I play some piano, but my dream is to one day play the acoustic guitar and rock out like the 60’s chick I really am (if you are one of the people who offered to teach me how to play, bless your heart! I WILL take you up on that).
- I’m really big on youth activism and getting young people involved in their communities. I previously held a volunteer position creating a weekly safe-space youth group, with the hopes of inspiring young people to build relationships that bridge differences and help build confidence and peer support. I’m also part of an organization called Ontario Youth Parliament, a non-partisan association that provides debate space for youth 14-21 who are interested in making social change and province-wide friendships. (More on OYP in future blogs, I promise!). I was heavily involved in Student Council in high school, holding committee headships and a presidency. I love love LOVE to collaborate in the name of school spirit!
- I’ve got a really bad case of WANDERLUST. I worked all through high school, and all my money went to my next plane ticket. I do as much travelling as I can, because I believe experiencing different places helps you find your niche in the world, wherever your little corner might turn out to be! On top of some incredible road-trips with my family, I’ve taught in Honduras, exchanged in Germany, explored France and Switzerland, and toured Greece. Anecdotes about being lost in the aforementioned places may pop up from time to time as well 🙂 They’re embarrassing, but hilarious enough to be worth it.
^^^Knowing these three things will give you a *basic* understanding of me as a person, but more to come on likes and loves and hates and interests and quirks over the course of the year 🙂
So friends, it’s about time for me to skitter on outta here!
On that note, some parting words:
They say that writing and creating in general is a selfish and indulgent act for the creator, but I really hope that what you read is helpful, interesting, and entertaining to you, too! Whether you’re reading because you’re curious about how I deal with the big city this year, or maybe because you’re a prospective Glendonite who wants a glimpse into campus life; I hope I can provide some insight, provoke some thoughts, and initiate some laughter through my posts.
à bientôt and DFTBA!
P.S. I am aware today is a Monday, however blog entries will be published on Fridays from here on out 🙂
P.P.S. Feedback and questions are always welcome. The more interactive this is, the better!
